TIPS

Although most businesses would say that they would most like to improve in the area of sales and profit margins, it is often the case that businesses first need to improve in other areas before a change is seen in profits. This is why it’s a good idea to be aware of all the different aspects of your business and how well each aspect is performing – it may be that one particular area, such as staffing or quality control, is letting down the rest of the business.

One of the most common issues a business has is the continued training of its staff. Whilst staff members may be clear on the business’ aims when they initially start work, after a few months it is not uncommon for the staff members to get into a rut or routine which does not promote success. This is why it is important to make sure each staff member receives continued mentoring and training – even if it is simply to touch base with the staff member routinely to ensure they are happy with their position within the business. Staff meetings on a regular basis are another way to keep tabs on every member of staff.

If your business is product based – whether it is in the manufacturing or retailing of particular items, or perhaps even shipping or marketing – another key area for business improvement is in the quality of the items themselves. While you may be comfortable with the items currently being produced it certainly doesn’t hurt to investigate the possibility of using new or improved ingredients or products, new manufacturing techniques, or even different packaging. Products within the food industry routinely redesign their packaging to attract new custom.
